This book contains photos of the largest assemblage of different Baranger motions in existence. This book is not only the comprehensive work of the Baranger Company but also shows photos of every motion ever made.

The Baranger Studios of South Pasadena created a window display service that was unique. Their job was to supply this material to jewelers and opticians. The sets, as they were called, consisted of beautiful elaborate backgrounds resembling miniature stages, and about 50 smaller supplementary fixtures on which to display the merchandise. Since these sets were to act as background for selling choice pieces of jewelry, they had to be the finest in beauty with eye appeal. It was in 1937 when Vice-President Robert Gerlach created the first mechanical display for the Gruen Watch Company. Since that time, 167 different "motions" were created and the company made 30 of each one. The business ended in 1957 and today these whimsical advertising automata have become important collectibles. This book is not only the comprehensive work of the Baranger Company but also shows photos of every motion ever made. Come with me and experience a journey back in time when these motions were created for the "young at heart."

In 1978, the company was purchased lock, stock and barrel by Burton A. Burton, owner of the Casablanca Fan Company. John Daniel, magician, collector and restorer of antique toys, trains, carousel figures and automatic music machines, was put in charge of restoring not only the 1600 remaining motion displays but the Baranger Studio itself. Duplicate motions were sold off and paid for the venture. One of each model was retained, and finally in 1987 all remaining motions, parts and tooling were purchased by John and Cathy Daniel. Burton sold the beautiful Tudor building and moved to Orcas Island in Washington to retire.
